biting, gnawing terror claws at your brain
A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin (1971)
Lucio Fulci, Don’t Torture a Duckling, The Devil’s Honey, and Cat in the Brain.
When I get paid, I usually go to Amazon and order a couple new Blu-rays to add to my collection. I like owning interesting movies. Last paycheck, I got Sorority Babes in the Slime Ball Bowl-o–rama (review forthcoming) and this one, A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin.
Here’s the deal, I thought this was a horror movie. It’s Lucio Fulci – that fact and the title are the reason I bought it. The other movies I’ve seen of his fall nicely into the horror category. Also, the cover is amazing. Well, turns out, this isn’t horror. It is a murder mystery.
And, there are absolutely no lizards in this film!
To be honest, I feel ripped off, even though it is entirely my fault for not reading up on what the movie actually was. Having said that, the movie is quite good, and as I paid for and watched it, I figure that I might as well post a review.
The film has all the things that make a good murder mystery. Misdirection, red herrings, and lesbian sex. The story revolves around Carol, Florinda Bolkan, who keeps having sexy time dreams about her neighbor who throws all night parties with acid and breasts. Said neighbor gets killed and all evidence points to Carol as the murderer. What follows is a series of tense moments, mounting evidence, and twisted dreams as Carol tries to figure out who has framed her. Probably. To give away the plot would be a disservice.
The picture on this film is amazing. A New 2k restoration put out by Mondo Macabro. If you haven’t checked out their releases and enjoy this type of cinema, definitely look at their catalog, which is comprised almost entirely of horror/sexploitation films from the 70’s, beautifully remastered. The Sound is equally good.
I absolutely recommend this movie to horror fans despite its lack of horror. I didn’t know where it was going to go with the plot and that is quite rare.
To get a copy, click the image below to go right to Amazon. A lot comes out on Tuesday this week, including a new edition of Drag Me to Hell. Watch out for my review of that one tomorrow. Cheers!
